When I asked some photographer friends to give me photo tips for moms, the first and most popular tip I got was TELL THEM TO GET IN CLOSE!! As a photographer, getting in close is a no-brainer for me. I love to focus close on those big brown eyes or teeny-tiny toes. My very favorite lens is a "macro" lens that lets me get super close up to document every little freckle and baby roll. I've noticed when teaching moms, however, that getting in really close seems scary to some people. I think part of this is because most people start out using point and shoot cameras that won't allow you to get too close. They have a fixed lens that only focuses at a certain distance and a yucky on-camera flash that blows out any subject within five feet. Once you've upgraded to a Digital SLR (one of those big cameras that has removable lenses - like a Canon Digital Rebel XTi), though, you don't have to worry about being back so far. Even with the most basic of lenses you can come up pretty close and get those fun details you want to remember forever! Worried the kids will be turned off by a camera in their face? Start off shooting from farther away and slowly move in. After a few minutes they'll be ignoring you like pros and you'll be able to get those great candid shots you crave. Or, grab a zoom lens and stand back like the Mamarazzi you are! :)

Thanks to Lacey Buchorn for sending me an example of a great close-up ... here's what she had to say : "Children have naturally beautiful and delicate features, so don't be afraid to get in close and show them off! By getting in close and filling the frame, you have the opportunity to peer deep into their soul. It is also a way to avoid cluttered, non-flattering backgrounds that can take away from the photo. Afraid of invading personal space or having a shot look *too* posed?! Try it out with a zoom lens!"
